PORCELANOSA Group Projects: Open Sky in Madrid26 July 2020
The Italian architect Gianni Ranaulo and the company Phalsbourg build a macrocomplex of leisure, shops and restaurants in Torrejon de Ardoz.
With a surface area of 90,000 m2, this design includes the most innovative solutions from Krion and Butech.
Located in the city of Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), the Open Sky shopping centre has used Krion™ compact mineral in its façade and technical systems from Butech, the construction solutions company of the PORCELANOSA Group.
Designed by the Italian architect Gianni Ranaulo and the Phalsbourg company, this 90,000 m2 macrocomplex, which is scheduled to be opened in the second half of this year, will house 114 shops, 32 restaurants, concert halls, cinemas, a 10,000 m2 navigable lake and a beach club with an artificial sand beach.
From a shopping to a ‘lifestyle centre’
To combine the different areas with the same design, Ranaulo has devised an enclosure of organic shapes using an 18,000 m2 ventilated façade. Built with Krion™ K-Life 1100, the Porcelanosa Group’s compact mineral, and with Butech technical solutions, its structure reinforces the sustainable nature of the building.
Considered a new-generation Solid Surface, Krion™ K-Life 1100 stands out for its pure white colour, zero porosity, high resistance to extreme temperatures or fire, its bactericidal nature (prevents the proliferation of fungi and bacteria and when it comes into contact with the surface, it suppresses them), its ability to eliminate air pollution, and its 100% recyclable composition.
With the Butech K-fix anchoring system, the different Krion pieces form a kind of circular layer that creates a double curvature in the roof.
The predominant white colour on the façade is interspersed with green spaces, as around it there are more than 40,000 trees and plants that are integrated into this space.
The landscape is particularly important in Open Sky, making it a green shopping centre. In fact, it has already obtained sustainable building certifications (LEED, BREEAM and WELL) due to the use of Krion compact mineral and solar panels on the roof. In addition, the lake’s water will be used to cool the buildings and its car park will have charging systems for electric vehicles.
